Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure performed to eliminate the physical and aesthetic problems caused by large and heavy breasts. Excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed to bring the breasts to a size more in keeping with the body structure; the breast shape is rearranged and the nipple is moved to its ideal position.

What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure performed to eliminate the physical and aesthetic problems caused by large and heavy breasts. During the operation, excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed to bring the breasts to a size more in keeping with the body structure.

Who Is It Suitable For?

  • Those experiencing neck, back and shoulder pain due to large breasts,
  • Those complaining that bra straps leave marks on the shoulders,
  • Those developing rashes and skin irritation under the breast,
  • Those having difficulty with physical activities,
  • Those having difficulty choosing clothes,
  • Those not aesthetically satisfied with their breast size may find it a suitable option.

How Is the Surgery Performed?

It is carried out under general anaesthesia. While excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed, the breast shape is recreated. The nipple and areola are preserved and moved to a more aesthetic position.

Incision Options

  1. Periareolar (only around the areola) incision — In very mild cases
  2. Lollipop (vertical) incision — In moderate reductions
  3. T-shaped (anchor) incision — In larger breasts

Recovery Process

  • Patients are usually discharged the same day or after staying one night in hospital.
  • Mild pain, swelling and tenderness may occur in the first days.
  • The use of a special surgical bra is recommended.
  • Most patients can return to their daily lives within 1-2 weeks.
  • Waiting 4-6 weeks for strenuous exercise is advised.

Clear answers before you decide.

Is breast reduction surgery permanent?

The breast tissue that is removed does not grow back. However, weight changes, pregnancy and hormonal factors may affect breast volume over time.

Does it affect breastfeeding?

Depending on the surgical technique used and the person's anatomical features, breastfeeding capacity may be affected. This matter should be addressed in detail during the preoperative assessment.

Is a lift also performed with breast reduction surgery?

Yes. During breast reduction surgery the breasts are at the same time reshaped and lifted. For this reason most patients achieve both reduction and firming.

When can I return to work after surgery?

Patients with desk jobs can usually return to work within 1 week. Jobs requiring heavier physical activity may need a longer recovery period.
