Liposuction

Liposuction is the removal of excess fat tissue accumulated in certain areas of the body with the help of fine cannulas and a vacuum system. The aim is not to lose weight, but to shape the body contours and reduce stubborn localised fat.

Incision size
3–5 mm
Return to work
~1 week
Final result
3–6 months
What Liposuction Is Not

A contouring operation, not weight loss.

Liposuction is the removal of excess fat tissue accumulated in certain areas of the body with the help of fine cannulas and a vacuum system. The aim is not to lose weight, but to shape the body contours and reduce stubborn localised fat.

What Liposuction Is Not

  • It is not a weight loss method
  • It is not a treatment for obesity
  • It is not a procedure that tightens the skin on its own

It is rather a "contouring" operation.

In Which Areas Is It Performed?

  • Abdomen and waist area
  • Hips (saddlebag area)
  • Thighs (inner/outer leg)
  • Arm area
  • Double chin
  • Back and bra line
  • Chest in men (the fat component of gynaecomastia)

How Is the Surgery Performed?

The general principle consists of 3 stages: Fluid infiltration (to loosen the fat tissue and reduce bleeding), Breaking up the fat (mechanical loosening with fine cannulas), Suctioning the fat (with vacuum). The incisions are usually around 3-5 mm and are placed in concealed points.

Modern Liposuction Techniques

  • Vibration systems: Break up fat more easily
  • Ultrasound-assisted methods: Effective in dense fat tissue
  • Laser-assisted methods: Helpful in dense fat tissue and for skin tightening

Who Is It Suitable For?

  • Those with localised fat that does not go away despite diet and exercise
  • People with good skin elasticity
  • Patients whose body mass index is not very high
  • People with realistic expectations

Recovery Process

  • First days: Swelling, bruising and tightness are normal. A special compression garment is worn. Return to work is usually possible in the 1st week.
  • 3-6 weeks: The body contours become more defined. The compression garment continues to be used.
  • Final result: Settles within 3-6 months; in some patients it may take 6-12 months.

How Does the Skin Look?

If the skin is elastic, the result is smoother and firmer; if the skin is lax, sagging may occur. For this reason, in some patients liposuction is planned together with additional skin-tightening procedures or lifting surgeries.

Modern Liposuction Techniques

Assisting technologies, the same principle.

Today different assisting technologies can be used. Each technique offers a different advantage at the stage of breaking up the fat tissue — but the basic principle does not change: controlled removal of the fat.
